Hello everyone!

I currently work for a company that supplies school lunch's across the United States. We are trying to determine if our mozzarella sticks qualifies as a smart snack. According to the CFR, it does not, because it is a combination food and therefore has to meet all fat criteria which it does not. However, the smart snack calculator on the USDA website says it is smart snack compliant, which is the opposite of what the CFR states. The sales team is pushing to sell as smart snack, but the QA team is confident that the CFR is correct and we cannot.

If anyone has any insight on this, I would be very appreciative. All the USDA documents are contradictory.

Hi JD,

IIRC USDA's website  offers an invite to pose direct queries. Maybe worth a try.

Kind Regards,
