Hey all!

 

Out of curiosity i was wondering how much people in my same position make? i am a Quality Control Supervisor for a snack manufacturing warehouse. My annual review is coming up this month and i know what i want to ask for, but im not sure f its too much or too little. 

 

I looked at the medium salary around me and i keep getting conflicting numbers.

 

Would anyone be willing to share what they currently make? 

 

I should mention i am about 6 months into this position but i moved into this position within 1 year and 2 months being employed at my company as just a QC tech. 

 

Currently I make 55,000 a year... i think there is room for growth. This is my first Salary postion too so this is all new to me lol

Sounds about right with the experience you have. Any formal education?

Depends on where you are geographically in the US, however in the SF Bay Area $55k is an appropriate salary with a similar educational and experience background.  I am in a management position and have many years of experience/education/certifications/etc. so I am significantly higher than a supervisor range.  You can look at similar positions in your area and look at salary estimators online for additional guidance and general salary comps.  Congrats on moving up the ladder and best of luck!

I am PCQI and HACCP certified. I was a chef for over 10 years and just came into quality control 2 years ago. I have an associates in culinary arts and business' management.  

 

There are certain things at my company that i am really the only one the efficiently knows how to do. labeling software, fixes, labeling legalities, things of that nature. I get calls on my days off and sometimes have to stop in and fix things when I take a day off. That why I was going to ask for a bit more on that front.

Seems about right for Columbus, Ohio. Top out would be around 62000.

Even if you are in the right salary range, always ask for a raise.  The worst they can say is "no".  If they value you as an employee, a raise will be given.  I would expect approximately 3% unless you have taken on more responsibilities or significantly exceeded expectations.

For any review, I would prepare myself with a summary of key achievements and performance over the previous 12 months pertaining to the role and your objectives.

 

If you can demonstrate significant progress in the role and achievement then this will enhance your chances of getting a pay rise.

There isn't a difference between a QC and QC salary wise. They are used interchangeable. 

 

Salary as a starter - too many variables. 1st. location will make a difference. 2nd. Prior experience in the industry, education background, certifications. 3rd - size of company. Smaller companies usually pay less. However, you tend to take on multiple roles in small companies and get more experience. This then can help   

 

How to move up - learn as much as you can. The biggest issue I've found with people. A lot of people want the title, money, freedom, etc. but when it comes down making decisions and taking responsibility of those outcomes - they won't do it.

It totally depends on the company and the area.  I started at one job as a line worker, moved up to QC tech, then QC/QA manager/SQF practitioner (HACCP/FSPCA /SQF certified) and was the entire QC department.  I was making about $38/year working 9-10hrs/day.  I recently made 2 job changes, first to a small, Japan owned company that makes surimi products, as assistant QA manager, then a few months ago to a small smoked fish company, about 1/2 hour from my first job and am making about double the salary working 4/10s and have 3 day weekends.

Hi.

 

I have about 8 years qc tech experience. In all my jobs though I always started in production and somehow always got promoted to QC. 3 years ago I decided I wanted to learn more and be more so I got out of my QC tech comfort zone and decided to apply for a supervisor position and landed a job as a QA "manager". Manager is in quotes because the company is small and I am currently the only QA on board so technically I do not manage people but I do manage the entire program on my own, I have no help >.< which I desperately need. I started in this position @$25/hour and after passing SQF audit with higher score I got moved to base salary which is around $62k/year in Cali I believe. So like everyone else said it just depends in location and the experience you have. For certifications and education I only have HACCP, PCQI, Internal Auditor, and SQF Practitioner.

 

Also it is not easy getting promoted. You have to want it and fight for it. I always believed you have to "have it", be super tough and a fighter to be able to work in this industry.

They don't. I moved cities and companies for my current position and 'promotion'. When I decided to leave my last job - I looked at multiple cities and different types of food manufacturing companies (USDA, FDA, RTE, Non-RTE, etc).

Because the people who didn't weren't making as much of an effort to improve their knowledge/skills by joining professional communities like this?

I am unsure if it is because I am in the New England area, but some of those salaries sound low. 

 

As my dad would say -  the company you are at is only allowed to provide you a max % raise. It has nothing to do with your change in position (unless hourly to salary) or work ethic. If you want a raise you are more likely to get it asking another company for it. They will pay you more to put up with the same bull**** 

 

Lohio - if you are making $55k ask for $65k at your current job and go on interviews and see what they say. Someone will likely pay you what you are asking.

in my last job, I was did dirty by my company, 

 

on signing up to become a full time, they set in my contract of 60k salary, which should not include super, but in actual it is 60k including super.

an honours degree in food science as well

 

then after 2 year, they only agree to raise my salary to 63k, no support to progress further, HR are hard to get in contact. (this is in australia, so compared to america, the number should be higher, this is equivalent of getting paid (direct conversion) 41k a year

weekend work is I believe also on the grey zone of legality, they pay 1.2x for saturday and 1.5x for sunday, and it is not voluntary, but a must

since it is salary, there is no overtime during weekday,

they only count the week as minimum 38hr pay, as it is not wage pay, but fair enough, being a salary

 

and I want to ask not based on above

my task during the day

• colect up to 30kg worth of sample which i need to carry in a 10 minute walk from sampling area
• test those sample for water activity, and send the other for external testing
• collect packed product for nutrition content analysis, collected in different part of factory
• do air sampling
• reporting product release
• allergen testing for product and food contact surfaces
• do pre op swab starting at 3, and finish by 4 that I need to go back down again, because cleaning finish at 5, and I need to catch an item for swab, giving me 1 15 min windows
• do internal audit
• equipment calibration
• GMP enforcement
• laboratory management, including cleaning, maintainance and procurement
• test pH of product
• check up on product storage (we have old cooling system that gave us 1 incident of the system leaking water at least once a month)
• keep up with product traceability
• be on call for middle of production cleaning test (allergen and microbial swab)
• chase up production floor staff ( collecting equipment that need to be calibrated)
• label all equipment under my care
• and the amount of sample to be tested cause me to work up to 9 hr a day

so yeah

on another note, I was in interview recently for a job not related to QA, or in a food industry, it is a lab technician in construction manufacturing.

they say the pay is wage based, need to work 40hr a week, and from what I understand they will only pay 38 hr of that week, with the last 2 hr will be converted into extra day off hr currency.so in a year, in addition to the standard 4  week paid leave, and 2 week sick leave, they will give extra 12 days leave from those accumulated day off hour currency.
what I feel it being bad is that, by technicality, i will work 12 days less in a year, one that is unpaid. and i dont have a choice in that if I want those wage I must take an unpaid leave.
but the 2 hr of paid leave will also give me those day off currency? (not sure)

also, that 63k was after me raising a fuss, as they don't even make inkling of approaching me to give me raise, in fact they make it known to everyone, no one will get pay raise. this was in 2022

and the company is a medium to big with more than 1 site in each Victoria, NSW, and Queensland, under a worldwide conglomerate

Hello! Generally QA is someone who ensures quality programs are developed an up to date with regulatory information, etc. QC is generally the employees on the floor enforcing and monitoring the employees and products to ensure they are complying with these requirements

Really interesting. UK salary would be about £30k max I suspect for this kind of role from the job title and some of the descriptions of responsibility which is about $37k. For £40k-50k tops+ you'd be looking at QA Manager probably with two levels reporting into you and the latter would be for Avery big complex site. About £50-75k for Technical Manager, so the most senior person for Technical on site, possibly even multi site if simple.

I use QC and QA interchangeably. I guess it depends on the company. I was given a fancy title at one of my jobs. It made me look important on paper. I had no real power.
