Can we use the same shelf life study for a different form of packaging until the shelf life study for the new type of packaging is completed? For example, we are using vaccum pack and giving product 45 days, but are in the works of changing the packaging into tray pack using MAP (should extend further than initial shelf life). Can I use the 45 days until the shelf life study for the MAP tray are completed?

Thanks in advance!

Hi FSQA88,

That sounds like a major change, although you believe that the change will improve the shelf life, it is a different packaging and you should be completing shelf life trials before putting the product in the market.

Kind regards,

Tony

Packaging material plays important role in the shelf life of the product. Shelf life varies based on the type of packaging material. Better to have real time shelf life study. Avoid using the same shelf life for different packaging material.

Are there any source for shelf-life study of Packaging materials? beside shelf-life trials.

This tends to be very specific to the product and process.  If you were manufacturing following a very specific set of pre-existing parameters, like co-manufacturing, you could use an existing validation.  In most cases you will need to do your own validation, or have one done by an experienced service provider, using your product.
