Pharmaceutical Enzymes (or metabolic enzymes) — proteins that catalyze the basic biochemical reactions, are of great interest in drug design and development. They are useful to speed up particular reactions; for instance, breaking down complicated molecules into simpler ones. Pharmaceutical enzymes are bio-catalysts that of natural origin and have exceptional substrate specificity. It is, therefore, very important in the manufacture of precision medicine.
Pharmaceutical Enzymes Types:
Hydrolases: Enzymes in this class catalyze hydrolysis reactions, breaking down the substrate through the addition of water. Some things, like the protein-digesting proteases or fat-slicing lipases, help however they can.
Oxidoreductases: Oxidoreductase enzymes catalyse oxidation-reduction reactions, they being fundamental in both metabolism and drug synthesis.
Transferases: Transfer functional groups from one molecule to another; this class is fundamental in the synthesis of complex pharmaceutical drugs.
Lyases: The bond between substrates is broken by this category of enzymes but without hydrolysis; they are important in creating or modifying drug structure.
