Hello All,

We're a dairy, I'm starting to switch from the 3 elements to KAT. Wondering if anyone has experience with balance tanks attached with HTST? Would it be considered a KAT? If so, which Activity Type would it fall under?

Thank you all so much!!

Also, it looks like every KAT needs and APS, but we have certain steps that fall into KAT category but are a closed system, how then do I determine an APS?

For example, Vitamin addition (KAT:mixing), but this process is automatic and closed...

Thanks!

the balance tank - I would say is KAT - liquid storage and handling - below is from the guidance.

Handling, metering, surge, or other types of intermediate processing tanks used to control flow rates of liquid ingredients or product through the production system. Handling tanks also include tanks or totes where the tamper-evident seals are opened, and the container itself is used as a handling tank (e.g., when a drum is opened and a pump is attached directly onto the drum to meter an ingredient into the product line).

Are your vitamins locked / secured?   Without knowing your system it think that could be your mitigation strategy (stored in lock / sealed cabinet and rest of system is "closed"

Good luck with the balance tank, back in the day i was lucky if they kept the lid on .   Operationally, that one seems dfficult.

Same situation with balance tanks, all our HTST has one attached and are open all the time... vitamin cabinets are locked though... I don't think it's feasible to lock the balance tank though, with production going on all day and changeovers...
