Cyclamate is a synthetic sweetener authorized as a food additive by CODEX STAN and a large number of countries (EU, Australia, Mexico, South Africa, etc.). However, it is not authorized by the USA, Japan, or India.

This regulatory discrepancy causes disruptions to international food trade. The FDA registered 37 refusals motivated by the presence of this sweetener. No health problems resulting from exposure to cyclamate appear to have been reported in the EU.

Should the FDA authorize the use of cyclamates as a sweetener additive?

Cyclamate was banned in the US in 1969 due to a concern that came from animal studies that showed a connection to bladder cancer. Actually development of tumors in the bladder.

Interestingly enough it is approved for use in over 100 countries  with and without guidelines for safe consumption.

The actual studies however really did not equate to real world as a small amount of RATS were fed very large amounts of Sucaryl for about two years (which is also about their life expectancy) and over these two years they developed bladder cancer.

With all of that said Cyclamate was discovered by accident (lab error suppositely) in 1937 and was actually marketed in the US under the well known (for years) brands of Sweet'N Low and Sugar Twin.

Coca-Cola came out with a soda called "TAB" that used Cyclamate - Sacherin and it was quite the "diet" soda - I remember every summer in the later part of the 60's our parents would always bring a cooler to the beach here on the island and it was loaded with the long-neck glass bottles of TAB.

Ultimately, it was the US Sugar industry and what many call Big Pharma twisting the arms of the FDA (more like stuffing the FDA's pockets with cash) that got Cyclmate and it's off-shoots banned so that a NEW artificial sweetener (Aspartame) could be rolled out that would be marketed under names such as Splenda.

Interestingly enough when I developed a heart condition, bio-medical researchers took my case on and thru their research found that it was inhallation of Aspartame that was the base cause of my illness - needless to say I never went into another facility for food safety inspections that manufactured Aspartame.

As America restores the Republic, I seriously doubt that the FDA (which is in the process of being reviewed heavily to be restructured) will lift the ban on this chemical and especially since there are many more sweeteners available that are plant based.
