Analyzing RASFF notifications each year in Europe allows us to analyze the evolution of food safety both within Europe and in exporting third countries.

It is interesting to analyze the top ten combinations of ORIGIN-RISK-PRODUCT.

Some of these combinations are repeated year after year within this TOP TEN.

There is a direct relationship between imported products with a higher number of RASFF notifications and the intensified controls established by EU Regulation 2019/1793.

This exercise also allows us to identify potential emerging risks.

Since chicken from Poland had been an issue for quite a few years, I’m not sure the analysis has enabled us to ‘identify potential emerging risks’? 

 

For example:

 

UK Salmonella outbreaks from breaded chicken sickened thousands and cost millions (April 2023)

‘A series of Salmonella outbreaks in the United Kingdom caused by breaded chicken products from Poland could have affected up to 5,000 people, officials have revealed.

The UK-wide outbreaks resulted in more than 1,000 confirmed illnesses in 2020 and 2021 with potentially as many as 4,000 additional cases which were not confirmed or reported.’

‘UK food safety chiefs are considering a ban on some Polish poultry products in response to rising salmonella infections, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) can reveal.

In a letter sent to the European Commission and Poland’s chief veterinary inspectorate in December, officials said they were concerned about the failure to tackle the disease in contaminated meat and eggs exported to the UK.’

 

Whilst the alert system is useful, is enough being done to reduce the number of incidents? Salmonella in chicken from Poland has been an issue for many years yet is still number 1 in your top ten chart.

Good morning Tony-C , as you say, the problem of the presence of Salmonella in Polish meat is not new and is well known ( parliamentary questions, FVO audits )

EC Regulation 178/2002 allows for extraordinary measures in the event of an emergency (Articles 53 and 54).

The Czech Republic has adopted unilateral measures that the European Commission has not agreed with.

This case may have a high-level political component that makes the adoption of measures difficult.

Personally,I have the impression that it is easier for the European Commission to adopt restrictive measures regarding, for example, pistachios from Iran than to adopt measures against a product of EU origin.
