The Global Challenge of Allergen Management
Robin Sherlock, Vice President of the Board of the Allergen Bureau

As food allergen related recalls increase internationally and the rate of reported food allergy rises, it is becoming apparent that the management of food allergens is one of the most significant challenges for the global food market.  The experience of the Australia New Zealand food industry in establishing a science based risk assessment protocol and providing tools for the application of allergen management   presents an interesting model for the international food industry as we work toward the establishment of harmonised action levels to provide confidence in labelling for the food allergic consumer. The session will look at the VITAL risk assessment tool and the impact of the VITAL Scientific Expert Panel and the release of VITAL2.0.

Thank you Robin for an enlightening presentation.

Allergen management is a regular discussion topic on the forum, so it's no surprise the presentation prompted so many questions:

  • What is Allergen Protocol?
  • There are 14 declarable allergens throughout the EU, however some of these are not declarable in Australia. Why would Europe establish these foods could result in food safety risks, so must be declared, whereas Australia does not?
  • Is there any chance that allergies develop hereditary?
  • If a supplier process an allergen on the same line that makes an ingredient for us but that allergen is not considered at our facility. Should it be declared? Or can we just verify their allergen management program and not declare it. Who will be accountable for it?
  • Should risk assessment be considered separately for different allergens since severity levels are different?
  • Congratulation on your beautiful presentation, very useful information, especially regarding similar practices in labelling and calculating tools. Where from can we download your presentation? Thank you.
  • What kind of allergen controls would you expect for a direct contact packaging manufacturer
  • Do you think the Australian Allergen List is likely to grow to include some of the international ones such as royal jelly, coconuts etc.?
  • Thanks Robin! Awesome data!!! How to become a Training Provider? I'm already ATP for BRC and TTT for IFS.
  • Are refined peanut and soybean oils are safe for allergic individuals??
  • Would you be able to give us some reference material for allergen management?
  • Can products handling equipment allergenic product e.g. celery, be a risk to other products?
  • can processing result in destruction of proteins to such an extent that they are no longer an allergen
  • Is it necessary for a manufacturing site producing primarily peanuts declare allergen  statements on its product
  • Shall we consider sulphate in sugar as an allergen?
  • Does the Allergen Management System run parallel to the Food Safety Management System or is/can be an integrated part of the same? If it is an integrated part, how does the flow of either affect the other?
  • Can Allergens be taken as hazards in HACCP
  • Great! Thanks...
  • Does avoiding allergen cross contamination bring solution to food production facilities plans?
  • Is allergen management only issue for developed countries? What you think about status of the rest of the world?
  • What is the difference between food intolerance and food allergy?
  • Can you elaborate how to analyse allergens hazard in a citrus concentrate plant

I must admit Simon that I have it all in one document, and that allergens form part of my risk assessment in HACCP. To be fair, I have a Food Safety Manual, and not a HACCP one. I have actually divided my system ( & BRC) into 3 sections: Food safety, Site Standards & Documentation and hold manuals for each.

I haven't been able to see the webinair as i'm in work, and my boss would perceive it as being paramount to watching TV or surfing Facebook!, but it's great that you are providing a précis of what has been discussed. At least the Australians have got their act together and provided us (the rest of the world) was a convincing portal in Vital.  I have had so much supporting information from it, and at least our retailers are au fait with it.
