Hi.

I have a question regarding the design of a microbiological laboratory.

I am well aware of the requirement, but don't know if my plan is good enough.

We are building a microbiological laboratory, in which we will handle the direct work with the bacteria. Closed petridishes will be transferred into a second room holding the incubators. This room has a door to the production area. From this room they will be transferred back to the microbiological laboratory without any door to production. Here the petridishes with growth will be autoclaved after use.

Requirements are in ISO/TS 22002-1:2009 Prerequisite programmes on food safety — Part 1: Food manufacturing
5.5 Laboratory facilities
In-line and on-line test facilities shall be controlled to minimize risk of product contamination.
Microbiology laboratories shall be designed, located and operated so as to prevent contamination of people, plant and products. They shall not open directly on to a production area.

Best regards :)

judging from my FSSC audit with previous employer you will fail automatically if you door opens into production....likewise the lab MUST have a working lock

Agree with Scampi, in addition it's just good practice. No one wants to track out salmonella or any other positive control into the facility, and inevitably someone brings things in and out of that space, whether it's deliveries, garbage, laundry, whatever.

But the lab opens into a second room and only that one opens into the production area. The microbiological one has no door into the production area itself.

Hi LQ,

You omitted to mention what kind of micro.testing.

In fact some companies/authorities are even more strict than noted above and require in-house microbiological laboratories to be housed in a building totally isolated from  the production facility.

The potential contamination risk is obvious however yr official options may be location related.

PS - Why do you need 2 rooms ? Lack of space ? I dont't think this manouevre  will fly as a zigzag.

I have encountered some labs running their autoclaves outside the main room due heat problems. Very dubious.

Kind Regards,
