One of the best ways to avoid any type of illness is to wash your hands frequently. Hopefully the upside of this worldwide scare is that people will be more careful about their hygiene.

Below are the protection tips from the WHO document posted by Saviour.

To protect yourself, practice general preventive measures for influenza:

• Avoid close contact with people who appear unwell and who have fever and cough.
• Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly.
• Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.

If there is an ill person at home:

• Try to provide the ill person a separate section in the house. If this is not possible, keep the patient at least 1 meter in distance from others.
• Cover mouth and nose when caring for the ill person. Masks can be bought commercially or made using the readily available materials as long as they are disposed of or cleaned properly.
• Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly after each contact with the ill person.
• Try to improve the air flow in the area where the ill person stays. Use doors and windows to take advantage of breezes.
• Keep the environment clean with readily available household cleaning agents.
If you are living in a country where swine influenza has caused disease in humans, follow additional advice from national and local health authorities.

What should I do if I think I have swine influenza?
If you feel unwell, have high fever, cough and/or sore throat:
• Stay at home and keep away from work, school or crowds as much as possible.
• Rest and take plenty of fluids.
• Cover your mouth and nose with disposable tissues when coughing and sneezing and dispose of the used tissues properly.
• Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly, especially after coughing or sneezing.
• Inform family and friends about your illness and seek help for household chores that require contact with other people such as shopping.
If you need medical attention:
• Contact your doctor or healthcare provider before travelling to see them and report your symptoms. Explain why you think you have swine influenza (for example, if you have recently travelled to a country where there is a swine influenza outbreak in humans). Follow the advice given to you for care.
• If it is not possible to contact your healthcare provider in advance, communicate your
suspicion of having swine influenza immediately upon arrival at the healthcare facility.
• Take care to cover your nose and mouth during travel.

The above is not really for a hotel but I suppose if you are staying open for business the hygiene and cleanliness of the hotel is even more paramount. Maybe place hand sanitisers in various areas and give out free kleenex? You could also give an information sheet about Swine flu to guests and also instruct them on what to look out for and how to keep themselves safe and also what to do / communicate to the hotel if hey become ill during their. I think you need to develop a simple policy along these lines and communicate it well to guests on arrival. Then monitor the situation and cross your fingers that it does not become a serious pandemic or we are all in trouble.

Note the above is not science or fact it's just a few ideas.

Regards,
Simon

Dear Anie,

The previous links detail technical basis / operational procedures for minimising the risk of transmitting / acquiring infection. Here are extracts from two responses issued on the internet which were presumably developed from such data with similar intentions to Simon's previous post. Maybe helpful to you.

The precautions implemented at our hotels, which are in addition to the already stringent cleaning requirements, include employees wearing protective masks and gloves in appropriate areas and job functions such as housekeeping, use of special disinfectants more frequently on all phones, computer keyboards and other devices in public areas, and more frequent hand washing with soap and water.”

As always, our top priority at is to ensure the health and well-being of our hotel guests and employees. To ensure hotels within our system are aware and kept apprised of current information regarding H1N1 flu, we have provided them with procedures and response plans to better educate them on viral influenza and the preventative measures they can take to help control the spread of this illness, as well as prepare them in case it is detected at their hotels.

For the latest information about H1N1 Flu
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/
The World Health Organization (WHO): http://www.who.int/en/

http://www.ichotelsg...p/swineflu.html

I would also hv thought that one answer to yr query would be to consult the local unit of the Public Health System who are normally responsible for co-ordinating advice on the appropriate response to situations like this.

PS and here is one more short list of some recommended protection steps to add to the previous posts -

In the UK swine flu seems to have disappeared off the media agenda. Is it the same in other countries? What's happening is it going to be a pandemic or what?

SARS, Avian Flu, BSE - Does anyone know the story of the boy who cried wolf?

One of the preventive measures against Swine Flu

Use “Nilgiri Oil” (Eucalyptus oil) drops on handkerchiefs and masks as one of the preventive measures against Swine Flu (NIV) National Institute of Virology.

Please share this valuable information with your friends.

Tulsi can help keep swine flu away: Ayurvedic experts

Lucknow, May 27: Wonder herb Tulsi can not only keep the dreaded swine flu at bay but also help in fast recovery of an afflicted person, Ayurvedic practitioners claim.

The anti-flu property of Tulsi has been discovered by medical experts across the world quite recently. Tulsi improves the body's overall defence mechanism including its ability to fight viral diseases. It was successfully used in combating Japanese Encephalitis and the same theory applies to swine flu," Dr U K Tiwari, a herbal medicine practitioner says.

Apart from acting as a preventive medicine in case of swine flu, Tulsi can help the patient recover faster.

"Even when a person has already contracted swine flu, Tulsi can help in speeding up the recovery process and also help in strengthening the immune system of the body," he claims.

Dr Bhupesh Patel, a lecturer at Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar is also of the view that Tulsi can play an important role in controlling swine flu.

"Tulsi can control swine flu and it should be taken in fresh form. Juice or paste of at least 20-25 medium sized leaves should be consumed twice a day on an empty stomach."

This increases the resistance of the body and, thereby, reduces the chances of inviting swine flu," believes Patel.
