Australian claim flavour

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has some knowledge on australian food law in connection to a claim:
The claim is no artificial flavours

But in europe we have the 1334/2008 directive and there in is no such term used. (In earlier law there were nature identical and synthetic)
The product is declared as a flavour following 1334/2008 with a flavouring preparation and a flavouring substance.

Now the question is can i say that the claim is correct since in europe we don't use that term :biggrin:
Or is it only possible when u have a natural flavour.

I can't seem to find a correct guide on the australian food safety authority site

Hi Phil,

I think Austalia (and New Zealand) is using the same regulations as EU countries like yourself. So, whatever is applicable to the EU regulations (only NAT and ART flavorings, NI = ART), is also the same in Australia.

But it is better if you contact the relevent organizations to confirm.

Unfortunately, the usual conclusion is like their football, ie "Australian Rules". :smile:

You need a relevant localised argument.

I take it you are asking because you are producing product for us Aussies?

Check out the Australian regulation website: FSANZ | Food Standards Australia New Zealand.

In particular for your query, refer to:

Standard 1.2.4 Labelling of Ingredients and Standard 1.3.1 Food Additives

Standard 1.3.1 also has schedules:

  • Schedule 1 By food type: permitted uses of food additives
  • Schedule 2 Alphabetical & Numeric Listing: additives permitted in accordance with GMP
  • Schedule 3 Alphabetical & Numeric Listing: colours permitted in accordance with GMP
  • Schedule 4 Alphabetical & Numeric Listing: Permitted uses of colours
  • Schedule 5 Technological functions performed by food additives

Hi Philip H,
A basic guide to flavours in the Australiasian market
Natural: Derived from a natural source. EG Apple flavour sourced from apples, but would also include a fruit flavour being derived from a vegetable for instance. Not necesarily derived from what it tastes like, but is a natural extract.
Nature Identical: Made in a laboratory to the same chemical structure as the flavour being copied. Chemically is natural, but made from individual chemicals.
Artificial: Anything not natural, apple flavour derived from something like coal tar.
Hope this simplifies the definitions for you.

Thanks for the replies, i guess it was kinda obvious.
But the supplier couldn't give a straight answer and the FSANZ site was not clear for me.
I guess can source for a natural flavour now.

Yeah, the FSANZ has a wealth of information. It takes a while to absorb and get accustomed to how they set up info location. You also need to know what you are looking for; bit of a catch 22 really.
