Requirements
Global food safety standards and particularly those schemes approved under the GFSI require certified businesses to conduct management and a host of other reviews. Private technical standards from retailers also require management review to be conducted on employees, suppliers, materials, HACCP and PRP’s. These standards are very prescriptive in terms of requirements.
For example, the SQF 2000 Code in section 1.1.4 requires senior management to review the SQF system and document the review procedure. These reviews should cover policy statements, audit findings, corrective actions and customer complaints. The standard goes on to require an entire review of the system at least annually and where there are changes to food safety plans. Finally, records of all reviews should be maintained.
The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety also has specific requirements in relation to management review. Section 1.1.3 requires management to review the entire system at least annually. These review meetings need to cover agreed actions and timelines, audits, complaints, incidents, corrective actions, non-conformances, HACCP and resources. Throughout various other clauses, the standard refers to the need to conduct reviews. For example, PRP’s should be reviewed as part of the HACCP review and specifications need to be reviewed every three years at a minimum.
