I am currently undertaking a MSc in Food Safety. For an assignment I am researching a Japanese food safety outbreak in 2000. I am trying to get a basic understanding of Japanese food safety law from 2000 - any ideas where to look or where to post on the correct forum?? Thank you so very much Charles, this information already is an excellent help to me.

I am researching an outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus in Japan, which happened June / July 2000. There were about 13,000 cases of food poisoning that related to this causative agent, the people affected had all consumed the same products from the same food manufacturer. I need to understand what food law was in place before and after the outbreak.

Hi Jaynie,

Is this the contaminated milk outbreak produced by the Snow Brand Milk Products Company? I can't remember many of the details well however believe that when the health inspectors came in, they found the factory to have very poor hygienic standards and a faulty valve was found to be the source of the problem (staphlococcus aureus)

I started to do a project on this many years ago, however trying to obtain information at the time was harder than looking for a black cat in a dark room. The Japanese are not very forthcoming with information that slams one of their largest and most popular milk brands.

I will try and dig out the information I had, however Jaynie you will probably obtain more relevant information now than what I had.

If you are looking at other outbreaks/incidents to delve in to, some good ones (well, not really good, however good for an MSc project) are:

1998 Listeria outbreak with Hotdogs and Deli Meats in America
2008 Listeria outbreak at Maple Leaf Foods Deli Meats in Canada
2011 Listeria outbreak with Cantaloupes in America
2011 Salmonella outbreak in a School in Tsementny, Russia
or one closer to my home would be the E.coli 0157:H7 outbreak in Wales in 2005, which was the largest outbreak of E.coli in Wales, and second largest in UK. If you do a search for the Pennington Report. He basically slammed the Welsh Health Authorities for not acting in the correct manner which could have prevented the incident.
