Barrier films are used to maintain / extend the shelf life and to protect food products from various external influences, especially oxygen and water vapour, light and aroma.  Different packaging substrates are better than others at being a barrier e.g. aluminium is a total barrier whereas some plastic films are not.  The choice of substrate depends very much on the application.

Do an internet search on barrier films to find suppliers who can offer you some guidance.
