Dear All,
The hopefully heard-of scientist, is, Ta-Da –
John Travolta
gadfly petrel = Avogadro
salmon roe
Avogadro is particularly associated with a (his) “Number” = 6.0221417930 × 1023
He is one of only 23 people whose names are used in Physical Constants (according to Wiki).

Gee, I think I am very glad I am anonymous.
EDITED to add: I would have started with Avo Cigars if I wanted to start the name with Avo.

I deduce no-one has heard of Avogadro.
Now I'm incredulous.

I have heard of him, but I've never hear of the last two things - maybe they're stuff only British people say? Or terms only biologist / wildlife people use? I don't get outside a lot.
I would have used an avocado for the picture.

Dear magenta_m,
Well, it's a relief that he is not totally unknown. TBH I assumed people would use GIS as a backup (or is that cheating? ).
Have to admit i have never (knowingly) met an avocado.
Just for info., these were some alternates to JT. i daresay the last one would have actually been preferred.

Hi Setanta,

Many of us have heard of Avogadro....but the combination was difficult. I thought the bird was not a gull, still it was difficult to discern that it was a petrel, and I had been able to really work on it still would have been inclined to work with petrel as opposed to gadfly. The roe was easy but it didn't help based on other selections. I was more inclined to think John Dalton, but how to get Dalton out of a bird and salmon roe.

You poor man. There is nothing quite like a cold beer, salsa, guacamole, fresh tortilla chips and ceviche on a hot day. Of course something on the Barbie and cold beer also good as well. Then there is a good smoked brisket and cold beer......oooh sauerbraten and spatzle with a hearty red wine...... I don't think I have a met a cuisine without something to like.

.....Avagadro must be the Nigella Lawson of the science world!
I think to be fair it was Mr Travolta that threw most people off
-the game is very difficult when the required syllable is in the middle of a word
-having said that, (in not guessing that it was Avagadro)- I learned an awful lot about all of the various scientists that it wasn't..... & I'm claiming 3 hours CPD for all of the research

I am surprised that no-one has it yet!!!
I'm keeping quiet to avoid taking the next turn!!!!!!
what about a tiny clue..... (If I am correct in who I think it is)..... this person was voted in the top 10 'Sexiest Moms Alive' 2010-what an accolade! (i'm sure she has won many more prestigious awards-but that was the one that stood out for me!)
