I had a new carpet fitted the other day. I tell a lie I wanted a new carpet fitted but got a crinkle cut, scraggy edged, ripple effect floor covering with a ~!!"### hole in it. In an attempt to disguise his indiscretion the ‘carpet fitter' had the audacity to stuff a carpet toupee into the hole [unglued] which was dislodged very easily and to our surprise whilst vacuuming shortly after he left. On closer inspection the alleged carpet fitter had also managed to break a step on the staircase during his endeavours. If only it weren't all true.

It started to go wrong when I went to a well know carpet retailer and got a quote which I felt was a bit on the high side, so the salesman offered his ‘professional' carpet fitting services [in whispered tones] to save me a bit of wonga. He assured me that he was highly experienced and he could get the underlay free. It sounded good and yet again, I was seduced by the cheaper option.

Fortunately for the ‘carpet fitter' he had already vacated the premises before I arrived home from work, rather quickly, in fact so quickly that he rush fitted the hall carpet on his way out. I rang him first thing in the morning [after a good nights sleep] and explained my findings. I asked him what corrective action he intended to take to make good his wrongdoings but unfortunately he had the audacity to deny breaking the staircase, and was dumbstruck about the carpet toupee. He said he couldn't make it back for over a week so I cancelled his cheque and told him his services were no longer required.

I feel a bit guilty as he worked very hard and did do a 90% good job. If only he would have admitted to the mistakes maybe, we could have worked them out amicably.

Have I acted ethically? What could I have done differently? What would you have done? Does anyone know a reliable joiner?
