Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated?

I have been asked to carry out a receipe validation for one of my clients who make dog food. This is purely an ingredient validation against the specification supplied by their customer. Can anyone give me some advise on how I should approach this, any example recipe validations they have done and has anyone got a audit pro-forma they would be happy for me to see.

Many thanks in advance

Chrissie.

Hi Chrissie

If it were me, I would treat it a an Internal Audit / Traceability exercise.

  • Ask for the specification that is being used to produce the product (it might not be the correct one!)
  • Ask for a process flow diagram of the product that is being produced.
  • Look for the point at which the ingredients are combined and added and ask for any documents that are being kept relevant to the ingredient input.  At a minimum I would expect to see a list of ingredients and their quantities that are added to the product.  Once you see the product flow diagram, you might identify other documents that should be available to ensure product integrity. Check off against specification.
  • Then ideally go and observe a batch of product being made.
  • Report back to your client.

Good luck.

Hi chrissieb,

i'm unfamiliar with this terminology (so is Google) but would have (randomly) interpreted it as a check of a product specification, ie an analytical job for a food lab.

I would simply ask yr client what they actually want. IMEX of running a lab. service, the customer is always right, even when they're wrong.

Thank you Charles, this was my confusion! The client require me to confirm that what their specification details in terms of ingredients is what they are actually getting. They expect me to be on site all day....as the previous post mentions as a minimum I would expect to see a list of ingredients and their quantities but I am trying to establish what other supporting data they would expect me to validate.

Many thanks...

Hi chrissieb,

Fair enough. i usually offered a quote for an arranged observation of a typical daily run of production/quantities + an analysis of  the correponding production.

Obviously  you will have/declare no idea of what happens outside that time frame.

IMEX unless there is already an established business between yr customer and the Producer, substantial resistance/obfuscatory activities may be encountered. Best evaluated before wasting a day in the field at yr expense.
