HI,

IS THE AOAC METHOD 961.09 RECOGNIZED BY FDA AND EU FOR QUALITATIVE ESTIMATION OF SULPHITES IN MEAT?

HI.

i HAD MEANT QUALITATIVE TEST ONLY. AOAC OFFICIAL METHOD 961.09 IS THE QUALITATIVE ESTIMATION OF SULFITES IN MEATS. I FOUND THAT SOME MEAT PROCESSORS ARE USING THIS METHOD AT CCP FOR CONTROL OF SULFITING AGENTS.

Thanks for clarification. IMEX "qualitative" is not usually associated with numerical "estimation" as seems to be the case here. "Approximate" might be nearer the reality.

I notice AOAC states that positive results must be verified by Monier-Williams so offhand it seems unlikely that this method will officially  be used on its own.

FDA seem, not surprisingly IMO, to focus on "quantitative", see -
