I wonder if there's anyone out there who can help me.

We're a Food Manufacturer in the UK who are currently employing a number of ethnic minorities.

We're investigating installing a "squat toilet". I'm concerned that we may be setting a precedent to allow other minority groups to make demands, but i also need to understand what is our legal and moral obligations.

If there's anyone out there who can help, i'd be grateful.

In the UK there are rules on the ratio of toilets you must provide per employees you have. I'm guessing it's about 1:25, but to verify you would need to ask the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). I doubt whether there are any rules (yet) on providing different toilets for different ethnic groups; although if one of the namby pampy government officials see this there may well be soon. You say above they are making demands - on what basis?

The yanks drive on the road side of the road and when I go there I'm inconvenienced, but within a couple of days I get used to it; I adapt to their rules, regulations and culture. I'm trying not to get angry here but if you are not obliged to by law (check with HSE) then I would not do it. I should think it is perfectly possible to squat over a normal toilet, they are low and not that wide - just different and you need to get used to it. Bit like riding a horse.

There was a story in a national newspaper on Friday regarding toilets for our ethnic brothers, actually at Belmarsh prison they are getting new toilets installed, not because they wish to squat but rather so that they are not facing mecca when they visit them.

I think this may be your only consideration when addressing this matter.

We did thanks

we've istalled one squat toilet in the main toilet block, although we were under no obligation to do so.

It doesn't face Mecca, and there is a "tepid" water supply to it in lieu of paper ( i don't want anyone burning their delicate bits and sueing me if the thermostat was to malfunction!)

Other that insuring it was also non-slip, there's not much else we needed to do.

Hi,

In Greece, where I come from and work, squat toilets are prohibited in food processing facilities, according to a national food hygiene law.
