Dear Fam.,

The normal functioning of a metal detector is to detect and reject non-conforming products with metals based on the critical limits set.

Will there still be a need to undergo Root cause analysis , Corrections and Corrective actions for any rejected product?

Thanks.

Angie.

Non-conforming product requires a root cause analysis, to understand the root cause to prevent from happening again.

from iso22000 (2018) -

3.10
corrective action
action to eliminate the cause of a nonconformity (3.28) and to prevent recurrence
Note 1 to entry: There can be more than one cause for a nonconformity.
Note 2 to entry: Corrective action includes cause analysis.

I assume "cause analysis" = RCA

I need to state something here, this MUST be part of your CCP validations..................the metal detector is DESIGNED to find metal, you should already have procedures as per your CCP about what to do when the metal detector rejects product. You should also EXPECT this to happen (or you wouldn't have one)

yes.

i do agree but finding a metal in a product makes it non conforming so does  must warrant a  corrective action right?

You should have deviation and corrective action procedures written into your CCP already, that's my point............yes of course you need to do something, but you shouldn't have to think about it.............just follow the deviation and corrective action procedures as written in your plan

to come up with a corrective action (defined as to prevent recurrence), a root cause analysis must be carried out.

A product being non-conforming and consequently being destroyed/reworked etc. should not be a reason why you will no longer carry out root cause analysis. If the product keeps being rejected by metal detector, then there must be something causing metal contamination.

Unless...your metal detector caused the rejection with something falling off into your product stream.  :spoton:
