The Sunday Times have announced the results of a survey they commissioned to find the "50 Best Small Companies to Work For." The survey was open to all companies with between 50 and 249 employees, and the results are based on the responses of more than 5,300 men and women. The result is the most comprehensive audit of the workplace culture in small companies in the UK.
The survey put 65 statements to employees in eight sets of 'factors'. Each question used a seven-point scale for responses ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The factors covered:
Leadership: how people feel about the head of the company and senior management;
Wellbeing: stress, pressure and the balance between their work and home life;
My manager: employees' feelings about their immediate boss and the way they are managed day-to-day;
My team: employees' feelings about their immediate colleagues;
Fair deal: satisfacton with pay and benefits;
Giving something back: people's perception of how much their company puts back into the local community and society in general;
My company: how people feel about the company they work for;
Personal growth: whether staff feel they are stretched and challenged by their job, and whether they can learn and grow in their job.

The Top 50 List
The chief executive of the winning company takes his turn on reception during lunch breaks, doesn't mind making the tea and even clears up the kitchen.
What a loser?
