i gather it's because FSSC 22000 is

ISO 22000 is a Food Safety Management System standard that covers the HACCP principles according to the Codex Alimentarius. But FSSC 22000 has two main additional benefits compared to the ISO 22000 standard. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) has recognized the FSSC 22000 Scheme through its annual benchmarking process, which results in more business opportunities for FSSC 22000 certified organizations in national and international markets. And secondly, FSSC 22000 has a robust integrity program that assures the delivery of trust within the consumer goods industry.

(Just a late add-on)

IIRC  one of the major (GFSI) operational objections to iso22000 was regarding the latter's "handling" of Prerequisite Programs which was considered insufficiently prescriptive.

Hence the appearance of the ISO-22002-X series as additionally required in the GFSI-recognised fssc22000 Standard.

(ISO22000:2018 has been partially modified as compared to the 2005 original in respect to above comment).

Kind Regards,

In simple terms, ISO 22000 is a standard which can be applied from 'farm to fork', whereas GFSI-approved standards are sector-specific. The far-to-fork approach means that specific prerequisites cannot be defined in the ISO 22000 standard, hence the use of the ISO 22002 sector-specific series of prerequisite standards. There are other additional GFSI requirements which are not in the ISO 22000 standard, such as allergens, food fraud and food defence. FSSC 22000 combines ISO 22000 + ISO 22002 + additional requirements to make GFSI-approved sector-specific standards.

Hi Cherrypie68,

ISO 22000:2018 Food safety management systems — Requirements for any organization in the food chain

This document specifies requirements for a food safety management system (FSMS) to enable an organization that is directly or indirectly involved in the food chain:

ISO 22000 is a generic food safety management system standard that does not meet the GFSI Benchmark Requirements. It is possible to be certified as compliant with ISO 22000 but this is no longer widely accepted as an acceptable food safety management system certification on its own.

GFSI recognition offers a passport to the global market, both for the recognised CPOs (certification programme owners) and the companies that they certify. In order to be recognised by GFSI, CPOs must verify that they meet the Benchmarking Requirements, one of the world’s most widely-accepted benchmark documents for food safety programmes.

Part III of the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements defines the key elements required in a Certification Programme in relation to:

• Hazard and Risk Management Systems (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) or HACCP based systems);

• Food Safety Management Systems;

• Good Industry Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Agricultural Practices.

So ISO 22000 certification alone is not generally accepted as evidence of a satisfactory food safety management system, the FSSC 22000 certification scheme includes the requirements of ISO 22000, is based on the publicly available standards/technical specifications, and is recognised by GFSI. In order to achieve FSSC 22000 Certification an organisation needs to comply with:

• ISO 22000:2018 requirements for any organization in the food chain;

• Relevant prerequisite programs (PRPs) based on technical specifications for the sector

(e.g., ISO/TS 22002-x; PAS xyz); and

• FSSC 22000 Additional Requirements as determined by stakeholders.

FSSC 22000 Food Sector Category, Subcategory & Relevant Documents with requirements for certification are summarised below:

B BIII Pre-process handling of plant products

C C0 Animal – Primary conversion

CI Processing of perishable animal products

C CII Processing of perishable plant-based products
