Hi

I am having a major problem where I have Eastern European workers who are not using the toilet facilities as required in the UK.

They throw sanitary wear on the floor and not i the correct buns and they put soiled paper on the floor and in the sanitary bin. They do not flush the toilets just block them up which ten they overflow.

We have had the agency explain to them and we also have signage up in their language

Has any body got any advice to help stop this.

Do the majority speak the same language or is it a more diverse group?

I don't like it, but it may be time to do some policing and start writing people up for it when you catch them in the act.

There is different cultures, but throwing soiled paper on the floor is no good no matter where you're from.

I remember some people would stand on the commode and then not flush it. I propose three solutions:

1) Have all toilets flush automatically.

2) Take any employee of concern to toilet and show them step by step. Every country may not have same facilities like UK. So practical training would be useful.

3) use relevant signage especially in more visible places. You can post in the language of your employees.

If none of those works, then you may get to administrative control (warnings, postponing job or even termination).

Hi astro,

It can clearly be complicated. There is a very recent thread on the same topic here. I suggest you have a look.

I can offer a possibly worst-case scenario, a necessity to hire a diver to unclog the system.

Kind Regards,

I remember similar complaints about Central and South American workers who were new to the US.
The thing is their city systems are not/were not very good. They were not equipped to handle septic issues well.
The people are not used to flushing as regularly was some others. Many consider it a waste of clean water, too. They aren't familiar with these things working as advertised, so they become reluctant to flush.

My solution would be to address these concerns. The septic system works IF WE ALL DO: Then list a step-by-step procedure for finishing up the bathroom routine--in their language. People have traveled far to be where you are, I think they are willing to adapt.

My 2 Euro cents.

We had some similar minor issues with the restroom usage.

In the end, we found that the embarrassing act of taking the suspected individual into the bathroom and explain to them in a very basic way how one is expected to use the restroom.

We also made sure to emphasis WHY the restroom must be used in this way and hopefully that also helped.
