Guys good morning, i need some help on this requirement.

 

4.10.3 Suitable and sufficient refuse and waste containers shall be provided, which shall be emptied at appropriate frequencies and maintained in an adequately clean condition.

 

Basically what the item says is that we must provide a sufficient amount of bins per sector and that they must be emptied with appropriate frequency and kept in good hygienic conditions. But not mentioned the need for bins to have a lid/pedal.

 

Last year we had an NC for not having a pedal in the bin. This causes the operator to use his hands to open the bin. Would it be a justification for not having the lid?

 

I would like to avoid a recurrence to not have a bent nc. But I would also like to avoid the high replacement of trash cans due to the maintenance of the lids/pedal

Open top with a liner and keeping the container clean - that is what we see almost all the time.

The requirement for a peddle was an Auditor miss-call.

When I read the topic referring to the NC I noticed that at no point was it mentioned about the container being closed.

The SQF facilities I've worked in made a point to keep cans covered with the "plastic dome" or at least use the "funnel" design that is in the link below. However like SQF consultant mentions I can't see how an auditor could get you for having a clean, lined, and well kept bin even if the bin was open. If a specifically covered bin was so important they could simply put it in the code.

Hi Igor,

 

That is not a requirement of the BRCGS Global Standard for Packaging Materials Issue 6. You should have contested the NC.

 

Surprisingly, it is not even a requirement of the BRCGS Global Standard Food Safety Issue 9, it only requires external waste containers to be covered or closed, clause 4.12.2:

External waste containers shall be covered or doors kept closed as appropriate.

Good morning Tony, thanks for the reply, I figured it wasn't necessary when interpreting the norm.

In our plant the only residues are paper, plastic and metals. The bins are closed and have a pedal, but due to the frequency of movements they are easily damaged, generating a high maintenance cost.

"There were 2 trash cans with a damaged drive pedal and 2 trash cans with manual access only in the areas of printing, cutting and creasing and knife preparation"

From the description of the NC I imagine that it was caused by the damaged pedal.

There's always a practice (assuming it's named A) that people use the most to comply each standard clause.
