Good afternoon !
I am trying to find information in Canada and in the US regarding a particular scenario.
Let's say we have a dried wheat grass product. The raw material is harvested, then dried.
There is no sorting in the process, so other plants may be in the finished product. An inspection in the field would be done prior to harvesting, but there still could be comestible weeds in the product. If toxic weed is found in the inspection, the field would not be harvested.
Is there a % of other plants that may be found in the product ? If so, what could it be without issues with CFIA or FDA ?
How could the risk be lowered considering the process (inspection - harvest - drying within a 2-3 hours window, then grinded) ?
From my researches, I'm seeing that there is no enforced limit of weeds or other plants, either in Canada or USA. However, it could be seen as food fraud as the wheat grass would be diluted. Would a mention of May Contain less than 5% of other plants be ok or 5% is too high ?
We would of course test for authenticity, but it may arrive that the other plants are not in what is tested... Trying to see the actual line for that matter. We would also not harvest any patches of weeds, but for any that are throughout the field, it is hard to avoid them...
Thank you !
