McDonalds have been flipping burgers in the UK since1974 and over 2.5 million of us munch on their fare every day.

There's no doubt McDonalds provide a great service and are fulfilling an obvious demand. They also do a lot for the community, probably more than any other organisation in the UK.

On the downside many people believe McDonalds are contributing significantly to the Nations growing obesity and health problems and that they target children cynically with their advertising.

On balance do you think McDonalds are Socially Responsible or Cynical Hypocrites.

McDonalds & CSR: RU lovin' it?

Are McDonalds contributing to the nations obesity...?

I personally am vegetarian so don't use the place and am presently well over my ideal fighting weight?
Although I do not go into our local McDonalds I do pass a couple of times per month and I am impressed with their sound-proofing that does a good job of muffling all of the screams and cries for help as people are dragged in off of the street and force-fed a double thingy with chips.

My opinion is that more people have spare cash (what's the phrase expendable income?) and generally tend to waste most of it. My advice is leave your credit cards at home and take out roughly the amount of money you want to spend on the CD, shirt, shoes etc. You will find something within the price-range and not spend any additional money wastefully (its true, you do grow up to sound just like your Dad!).

Good question I said that but don't have any evidence as such, apart from the fact that 2.5 million of us eat there every day. It probably won't help. No very scientific though I know.

I know what you're saying Bonno we have a choice, but when our kids are constantly bombarded by McDonalds kid-targeted ad campaigns, it can be hard, my kids are strong and I am weak. My boys are five and we've been to MD's roughly ten times over the last couple of years. We've not been for quite a few months.

Yeah in many ways I wish we could go back to the days of just cash. My Dad got his weekly wage packet and when it was gone it was gone! Good advice Bonno.

Another thing that you have to consider that has changed is the possessions that children now own. My daughter is 14 and has more electrical items in her room from Christmas presents from over the years, than my whole family had spread around the house while I was growing up.

I coach a junior football team and over the year while I have been doing it I have struggled on occasion to get some players interested. Lets face it who wants to run around in a muddy field in the driving rain and freezing cold being kicked and pushed when you can be David Beckham on the Playstation/Gamecube/Computer etc. in the comfort of your own (heated) bedroom......

Children don't get enough exercise. Even simple things like walking to school seems unreasonable. I used to play football on the street well after it got dark, only coming in when my Mother called me in. You can't play football on the street any more because every house has a car on the drive for her and one on the road for him, leaving nowhere free for playing........

I really am starting to sound like my Dad.....

Coincidentally I was discussing this with the Wife last night, you're spot on Bonno there are many more opportunities to waste our (and other peoples) cash these days. When I was growing up we had a radiogram a wireless and that was it. The height of fashion was a pair of Dunlop Greenflash, a stripey tank top and a lumber jacket. Eee those were the days. :crybaby:
