Dear Members,

I am from Malaysia and I have just found out about this Food Tracebility stuff. It sound vey alien to me but when I read it, it look scary. No tracebility thats mean food products cannot go to EU or enter there...can't some one help me on this issue.

If by December 31 2004 mid nite if our food just arrive in any EU port, will it mean they will get stranded if no food tracebility?

If yes, what shall the Malaysian exporter do?

Sincerely
Ritchie

Hi Ritchie,

Well you could bury your head in the sand, hope it goes away and possibly risk losing business. Or you could try to understand what traceability is about and why it's also a good idea for your customers and your company. Who knows maybe it could give you an edge over less proactive competitors?

Don't think the EU is requiring traceability just for the hell of it, it's an important element of a food safety system and also don't think the EU will be the only region to require traceability in the future.

I'd say you need to get started quickly if you want to make the deadline. Ask as many questions as you like on these forums and we will do our best to help you. If you want more specific help maybe from a consultant in Malaysia contact Charles Chew he's one of our Malaysian members and I'm sure he might know someone suitable and local to you.

Regards,
Simon

-Thanks Pal

Ritchie, If you do not currently have a traceability system for your products, it would be wise to get started on it soon. I think the topic of this segment is really appropriate. ISO 22519 and HACCP can be interlinked to exploit the best of guidelines for an effective trace system. I know some of the international trade requirements do sound very frightening but thats country specific standards you are refering at - i.e. Bio-Terrorism Act (USA), ISO 22519 are just a few of them.

Email me if you need help on this.
