The Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) conducted a nationwide survey of quality professionals with the aim of gauging existing attitudes and opinions towards the profession.

A snap-shot of the survey results were:

* 58% agree that quality practices need to be reinvented for the 21st century enterprise.

* Over half of respondents (54%) think that most business managers do not see the benefit of having formal quality management processes and training.

* 45% of quality consultants agree that most quality professionals fail to translate their skills and processes into something that is relevant to business managers.

* 89% agree that if business managers and quality professionals understood each other better, British business would benefit.

* 78% agree that the key to closing the gap between quality professionals and business managers is education and training.

* 92% agree that a commitment to quality can deliver significant improvements. Rather more disconcerting, 6% either disagree or neither agree nor disagree!

* Over half (58%) agree that a commitment to formal quality management processes and training can deliver significant improvements in work-life balance.

* 46% agree that quality certification and affiliation is primarily a means of qualifying as a supplier.

* 39% do not agree that quality certification and affiliation is primarily a means of qualifying as a supplier.
