We are a sliced meat USDA regulated plant.  We recently acquired an off site distribution warehouse for our packed finished product.  I have never had to deal with an offsite facility other than the actual manufacturing facilities.   I have been asked to set up a cleaning procedure for the warehouse.   My questions, will USDA regulate the shipping warehouse since the product is already packed or does it fall under another regulatory division? Just curious on that one. Secondly, other than including basic house keeping into the MSS is there anything else you would include?  Currently, at our in-house warehouse we clean and sanitize everything once a year but I do not think that will be possible at the new warehouse.

Dear Foamyc -

From a general standpoint, you might check out the BRC or GMA documents attached.

For FSIS compliance, I am not 100% sure. If you store/ship products for others in your warehouse, then you will want to apply for voluntary inspection. You may want to go to the FSIS website and enter 'warehouse' in the search box. You need to set up a Food Defense/Security program (there is a guide on the site) and other procedures. You will need a procedure to handle damaged packaging with exposed product.
