"The 2008 Beijing Olympics Food Safety Expert Committee" was jointly formed by Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the 29th Olympiad (BOCOG) and the Food Safety Committee of Beijing Municipal Government on July 4. This indicates the full start-up of the food safety program for 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The expert committee consists of seven Chinese experts and eight foreign ones. Some of the experts have taken part in the process of food safety in several former Olympic games. The eight foreign experts are from the World Health Organization (WHO), NSW Food Authority, Australia, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration, etc.

The Food Safety Program of the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be completed in the near future with the efforts of these experts. Some tasks of this program will be gradually implemented within this year. Zhang Zhikuan, vice director of Beijing Municipal Food Safety Committee and director of Beijing Industrial and Commercial Bureau, said the program includes many aspects, such as, the safety in supplying materials for food, safety inspection of the whole process, dynamic tests on the food supplying bases and manufacturers, the access conditions for Olympic catering service providers, the timely food safety inspections and the risk controlling measures over the stadiums and other key areas during the Olympic Game, as well as the food anti-terrorism during Olympics, etc.

This topical news item provides me with the opportunity to congratulate London (and the bid team) on getting the 2012 Olympic Games. I hadn't been very interested but found myself captivated by the drama of the final presentations and the announcement… quelle surprise!

I'm sure it will be fantastic and a truly once in a lifetime experience.

Regards,
Simon
