We are in the middle of our preparation for ISO 22000 certification and one of our major client (dairy) insists that we should also comply to the requirements of TS 22002. We are a bit hesitant because our final process involves heat sealing. Can anyone please help us on what to do?

Dear danny_03_ph:

I read your company is a food packaging manufacturer. PAS 223 has just been published this month by BSI. The document states prerequisite programs for the food contact packaging manufacturers.

If your customer is asking for this kind of compliance, then you are commercially pushed to do it. You will be able to apply for FSSC 22000 certification when combining ISO 22000 + PAS 223.

PAS 220 or ISO 22002-1 is intended for food manufacturers.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

FSSM

Quite right FSSM - I expect another ISO TS to follow

Sales pitch from BSI:

PAS 223 is aligned with, and supports the implementation of ISO 22000, by setting out specific requirements for the development and implementation of prerequisite programmes in the manufacture of food and drink packaging. The PAS is also in line with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)’s new guidance for food packaging certification.

PAS 223 aims to ensure confidence in food and drink packaging safety systems and bring consistency across global packaging industry practices. It could also potentially reduce tendering costs for packaging manufacturers who adhere to it and as help align packaging activities more closely with their clients’ requirements.

“PAS 223 is yet another step in right direction to help the food industry implement ISO 22000,’

PAS 223 can be purchase here for £80
