So this might be a touchy topic but I need some help.  With BRC (and food safety in general)  I find it very hard to come up with way where a person in a wheel chair would be able to work in a meat processing plant.  The chair would need to be cleaned and inspected every time it entered the room.

The person in the wheel chair would have to touch the wheels as they move around the area.   Then when they arrive at their station how would they wash their hand so they could work?   Can anyone help, is this a lost cause?

It would also need to be easily cleanable and then is just another piece of equipment on the cleaning schedule.

Person with wheelchair in processing area? Sound to be a bit dangerous - in human safety issue as well as food safety issue?

I think he/she will suffer though since he/she has to follow many personnel hygiene rules. For example,
1) Protective gear changing (many times a day due to protective gear should be removed when using toilet, smoking, consuming food, or even when going out of the processing areas),
2) Hand cleaning and sanitizing (before entry, during operation, and as necessary - touching wheels whenever moving around)

Moving in/out (passing sanitation dip - wheel dip?) and around in the area full of equipment and/or line workers sound dangerous to him/her as well since it might be easily to bump with the machines or other workers.

Person in wheelchair should be hired as non-processing workers (e.g. working in office, lab, maintenance, etc) more than processing workers. More convenient and safer I think.

Thank you for the replies.  I suppose the chair could be dedicated.   As for the duties, we have many different jobs in the processing plant.  I can’t say for sure what exact job this person would have.  We do move team members around a lot so it could or would change.  Thanks again.

In yr location, I would be amazed if this scenario were not already covered within local regulatory edicts.

As far as the sanitizing of the hands goes, I would recommend an alcohol spray sanitizer at that individuals work station.
