Then your audit will result in non-certification.

It isn't clear to me if this something discovered in an audit situation, or something you've uncovered as a result of internal audits. You do need to repair the item and remedy the situation before you move on. You may need to get re-certified. I think we'd need more information to be in the best position to help.

A non-conformance against a fundamental during a certification or re-certification audit can result in the audit being abandoned... show stopper in other words.

See page 66 of the standard.

The exact action probably depends on the audit itself and the certifying body, but in most GFSI cases you will not be granted certification and will need to be re-audited when the issue(s) have been corrected. It could also lead to recall situations and or loss of customers, again depending on who is auditing and the type of audit being conducted.

To add to previous posts, some relevant parts from the BRC Food Safety Standard:

The grading of non-conformities is reviewed by the independent certification process of the Certification Body

It is unlikely that these non-conformities can be addressed and fully effective improvements implemented and established within a 28-day period - although there may be some exceptions*.

Where this occurs at a certified site, certification must be withdrawn immediately.

No certificate shall be issued until major and minor non-conformities have been demonstrated as having been corrected.

* I have successfully appealed against a major non-conformity raised during a BRC audit and as indicated above there may be exceptions where you are able to close out a major non-conformity within the prescribed timescale.

Regards,

Tony
