Conveyor Belt Volume Calculation

Hi IFSQN members, 

 

We are trying to verify if the document and record provided by our supplier is correct, and based on the record they provided, I feel that the number doesn't add up. Any one that is familiar with food engineering or math can help? 

 

They claim that they perform a kill step for product that require holding/heating the product through a conveyor belt system for 120s. Only 1 machine doing this step. 1 kg of product is constantly fed into this conveyor belt. Will the supplier finish kill step for 12170 kg of product within 24 hours?

What do you mean by this? do you mean that the instantaneous capacity of the kill step unit is 1 kg? For a rate of feed your gonna need a unit like kilogram per second/minute/hour.

If I'm understanding the question right, the feed belt must be at a minimum of .141 kg/second, which will depend on the speed of the belt, and the capacity of the belt, so you would need to provide that information to get what you need.

OOH, math! 

Let's see, so 86,400 seconds in a day, divided by 120..

We are missing important variables I think. What's the capacity of the belt? So they can only put max of 1kg through at a time?

I meant that 1 kg of product is constantly feed into the conveyor belt. The conveyor belt is set up flat (rolling horizontally). The conveyor belt speed is 0.5 m / s. how did you get 0.141 kg/ s? It is moment like this I wish I had pay attention in food engineering class. :(

is this a baking tunnel?  what method of kill step?

 

What is the product or product type?

You're misunderstanding. OP was asking IF 12170kg could be done in 24 hours, not that the supplier claimed that. What we're still missing is the capacity of the belt.

OP, imagine a one meter wide belt at .5m/s. Now image a one centimeter wide belt at .5m/s. those will have drastically different throughputs, which is why we need to know the capacity of the belt. Maybe it's just me but I don't know what you mean when you say "the product is constantly fed onto the belt".

Hi Stan,

 

As previously noted, some further (belt) numbers are required in order to determine feasibility..

 

I anticipate the solution is equivalent to calculating a continuous IQF belt freezer.s freezing capacity.
