We had an audit with AIB for food contact packaging and have had no issues with past auditors but this last one gave us an unsatisfactory finding.  Stacks of sheets are discharged off the machine and go down the line while employees walk alongside them and inspect for quality.  dunnage is extra sheets of corrugated on the bottom of the unit.  The auditor said this was not acceptable since they walk on the line.  Our end customers cannot run those sheets on the bottom of the units because of handling damage and so on. In the past this was always acceptable but got us an automatic failure.  Anyone in the industry have this issue in the past????

Reach out to AIB directly and inquire about this to them  I do know there is a new standard coming out, but not sure if it is being audited to yet or not.  Either way you should be provided with an explanation on this and one that you understand, especially if it is considered a failure.  It is in the best interest of both you and AIB to completely understand the finding and why it was rated the way it was.

I would contest it, I would doubt the customer would consider using those sheets anyway for the very reason they stated, contamination risk, but that would be up to them no matter what you do. As long as everything above those is safe. Our processes all in-house. Sheets are created and stacked on skids then sent to the next process (print or die-cut) but each process discards the top and bottom sheets of every load to eliminate the possibility of contamination. Inspection done inside your high hygiene finishing areas are protected by your GMPs so there should be no inherent risk to the product.
