Hello folks,

 

I was recently asked this question: Can we do both pet food (plant-based) and human food (snacks) in one facility? The government seems to have no issue with it, but does FSSC, BRC or SQF has any restriction of certifying both sectors together?

Hi Boston Cream,

 

I wouldn’t see that as a problem as long as the your standards for your pet food comply with the standards for human food.

 

As an example the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 9 has Section 5.8 Pet food and animal feed: Where a site produces pet food or animal feed, all the relevant requirements from sections 1–7 of the Standard must be fulfilled in addition to the requirements in this section.

 

I don’t see why it would be a problem, but I would also check with your certification body that they are happy to certify for both just to be sure.

Also conducting pet food production does not affect my current FSSC certified human food production, I won't loose my FSSC cert of human food sector just because of this. Right?

We make a variety of things including cookies for humans and dogs.

BRCGS doesn't have a problem with it, as long as you meet their requirements.

 

Here in the USA we have to comply with FDA's Preventive Controls for Animal Food. It's not onerous, as it's basically Preventive Controls for Human Food with some specificity to animal food.

The fact that we only make "treats" or "snacks" for dogs means a lot of the specificity in the Animal Food law does not apply.

 

The only real difference we have with producing human cookies and dog cookies is that our dog cookie customer(s) require micro testing of the finished product before we can ship it.

The scope of the audit would have to change - what is written on the cert and the qualifications of the auditor and perhaps other things replated to he scope. So you MUST tell the CB early to get this right.... best of luck!!
