Hi Rosaleen,

This requirement is for providers of product safety training although it is good practice for all training suppliers.

The relevant clause of BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 9 is 3.5.3 Management of suppliers of services:

There shall be a procedure for the approval and monitoring of suppliers of services. Such services shall include, as appropriate:

….

....

• providers of product safety training

BRCGS Issue 9 Guidance states:

Approval may include a combination of the following:

• membership of a recognised trade association which specialises in the service provided (e.g. pest control)

• historical experience with the supplier

• legal registration (e.g. waste licences)

• third-party certification to a recognised standard (e.g. the Global Standard Storage and Distribution)

• evidence of training and competence in food safety

It may be appropriate to review the training materials and assessment of training effectiveness for new suppliers as part of the approval process. So, initial approval based on criteria above and a follow-up confirmation by reviewing the effectiveness of the training (such as test results or interview). You are going to need a review of effectiveness as per 7.1 Training clause 7.1.3 so you may as well use it as part of the supplier approval process.

Your procedure should reflect whatever you think is most appropriate from the above points.

Kind regards,

Tony
