Covered Waste Containers

I understand that all waste containers need to be covered at all times. We have waste coming off our line at all times when the machine is running, Is there any way around this? Can we leave it uncovered while running machinery and cover right after without issue? Mostly its workers unwrapping bad packages that would be throwing the wrappers/defect product into the garbage. Opening and closing the lid every time is just not feasible. Even a spring loaded door from Rubbermaid really wont be good. Maybe the funnel type lid when running and full closure when not running machine. Any thoughts?

Hi Mike,

A swing lid bin or pedal bin seem the best options, not sure if this will fit with what you have in mind.

When I was at a cheese packaging company we had open trash receptacles in production that did not have lids. We were a level 3 SQF facility and were never dinged for it. It mainly contained wrappers from packaging and some cheese that had hit the floor or whatever reason was trashed. We would cover them during breaks/lunch.

Our state requires us to have open trash containers at wash stations for the paper towels after washing hands. In the plant we have bins marked "Trash/Rubbish Only" that we allow to stay open for paper, cardboard, plastic wrap, etc. only. Anything considered "garbage" with food residue is covered. Everything gets taken out often for disposal throughout the day. This has never been dinged on state, federal, or GFSI levels. We did have an NC when the rolling cart we use to transport was found to have a bit of standing water in it after cleanup.

My understanding was trash bins must be labeled. No lids are okay (as long as they are not outside) but if there are lids they have to be slopped so nothing can be placed on them. Having lids on rubbish bin I find to be a bigger risk than not having them.

Interesting. What's the (bigger) risk ? Unmentionables ?

If true, this would appear to be an indication of even larger problems in other directions, hygiene/communication perhaps ?
