Best Practices for Effectively Implementing an ATP Sanitation Verification System

Taking place:

Friday, January 12, 2018 - 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM UK Time

This is a 10.00 AM Eastern US Start

Presenter:

Jim Topper, Sr. Market Development Manager, Neogen Corporation

Webinar Overview:

Increasingly, the focus for food and beverage production facilities is on having a robust, formalized environmental monitoring program. One of the key components of any EMP is a structured ATP verification monitoring program. While the majority of food and beverage production facilities in the developed world utilize ATP sanitation monitoring systems, their employment is often unstructured and sub-optimal.

Neogen, in conjunction with industry experts, has developed a handbook titled, “Best practices for effectively implementing an ATP sanitation verification program”, that provides real-world guidance for facilities wishing to enhance their EMP through a more formalized and structured approach.

Topics covered will include:

- Validation Vs verification
- Cleaning to a validated standard
- Swabbing and establishing baselines
- RLU’s as an indication of cleanliness
- Migrating from validation to verification
- Using the results to improve cleaning
- Interpreting test results
- Complementary environmental testing

Ivar P Brandt : still no video nor sound no connection
Christi : I don't know if I missed it, but do you ever have any issues with the cleaning chemicals skewing your results?
Dionne Mills : hello from Trinidad and Tobago
Blessie : Does ATP testing apply to a flexible packaging environment? We do poly bags for the food industry. Is there a better option to ATP testing for our Environmental Monitoring Program?
Orlando Benavidez : unable to connect, room is full?, please present topic again for the overflow
Liz : how are these values established  by manufacturer?
Garrett : Christi, in my past organic sanitizers skew this drasticly
Christi : Thank you Garrett
Arezou Rahbari : I was able to download the document.
Ryan : Yes...sanitizers with high oxidation potential skew ATP results.
tracy Eastham : has the session stopped again ?
Kevin : would SPC be a useful tool to determine if the process is in control and establish the limits
Garrett : Blessie, I would not suggest using ATP for true envrionmental monitoring (listeria/Salmonella) I would sent swabs to ta 3rd party. just my opinion
Sarah : the facility I just started working at only uses protein swabs for sanitation verification. can anyone speak to that vs ATP?
Stephen : I had to log in 16 times and I can now see the presentation
Shannon Fickett : Consistency is good but does not equate to adequate level of cleanliness, no?
Simon Timperley : sorry I have just unblocked the 500 limit so all can get in now
Shannon Fickett : What if the cleaning practices are consistently bad?
Simon Timperley : we will send recordign also
Stephen : Thanks Simon
Steve  : Hi everybody! Happy to be here.
Melanie : no sound
Deshraj sharma : hi Deshraj sharma form india
Robert : If you failed the download the first time, try it again.
Elizabeth : can you repeat - sound went out
Ryan : @Sarah...depends on your product.  If your product(s) have protein in them then yes protein swabs can work well.  Protein one of the more difficult mediums to remove from a surface.
Deshraj sharma : hi
Neal : Guide download in CA worked
Steve  : This is steve from Ivory coast
Evelynn : @Simon Timperley, Will these slides be available after the webinar? I'd like to keep them for my validation log.
Ingo : able to download after several tries
sarah : i cant download the document i reloaded it like more than 5Xs
Kenly Edwards : clean as you go an assit to ensure that equipment are in a sanitary state
Deshraj sharma : hi deshraj sharma from india
Venky N : Is ATP testing after Sanitation ok ?
Frank Aguirre : Does anybody out there perform composite testing?
Dominic : We currently use ATP swab for SSOP verification in a wet operations environment harvesting live in-shell moluscan shellfish.  Is ATP swab appropriate for wet operations involving seawater on boats?  The food we produce is non-rte evne if consumed raw oysters must be shucked prior to eating.
Sarah : @Ryan, thanks. My last company used protein for allergens only and ATP for all sanitation. It seems that ATP is effective for both, and so is protein since our products do have protein.
Rafael Gomez : I can't download the document
Nathalie Khodr : My apologies if this was covered already, but how do you explain that an ATP swab can 'pass' but a microbial test of the very same area show growth on the plate? Thank you.
Sawssan Itany : I have a problem in connecting'
Liz : should ATP be done in the raw processing area when the product will be fully cooked at a later step?
Stephanie : please what is SSOP?
Ana Maria Guzman : Yes, composite testing
Shannon Fickett : sanitation standard operating procedure
Sarah : SSOP: sanitation standard operating procedure
Stephanie : thanks
Ryan : @Liz...it can to verify your cleaning.  But likely not to the same level as the cooked side.
Simon Timperley : yes Evelynn
Liz : @Ryan..are there different threshold values for raw area
Ryan : @Liz...yes, depends on your validation. :)
Michelle Cox-Horton : My company operates (4) deli slicing operations and (3) rotisserie ccoking operations. We operate AM and PM shifts. for the deli slicing operation should ATP be used pre or post shift?
Amy Gore : SSOP = Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure
Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif : working now. thanks
Sarwat : Now no sound
Nicole Haddad : Can effective cleaning with no sanitation result in satisfactory ATP test results?
Kimberly : Thanks Neal!!!
Brenda : Nicole- Yes you are right
Shannon Fickett : If you sanitize before ATP testing , you wont know how effective the cleaning was
Kelly : lost sound
Naz : it was mentioned that do not swab standing water. how about sanitizer? if the surface is wet with sanitizer can I swab it? thnx
Steve  : Sorry, I can't hear the speaker!
Irina : REFRESH THE PAGE
Simon Timperley : we are going and it is streaming fine, try refreshing your browser
Nadir Ahmed : hi everyone
angela martinez : refreshing ... and re connectiing... still not working
Kimberly : Correct Shannon! It will also give false positives.
Frank : No sound
Thomas Gilley : NO SOUND AND NO RECONNECTIONS
Amit : How effective is ATP testing in surfaces with biofilms? Is it possible to get a false PASS result for such an insanitary surface?
Robert : No sound
Pamela : I am watching the chat log.  Interesting!  I still can't hear or see the session.   IT on my side says my computer is ok.  I will watch the chat for today.  A case of early bird gets the worm :)
Luisa : Give up. Bye
Sabir : Folks if the audio cuts out or video freezes: hit the reload button on chrome. It should work fine (at least it did for me)
Kelly : thank you Sarah. Pressing reconnect works.
Frank Aguirre : Are companies out there doing swabbing after CLEANING or after SANITIZING?
Amit : How effective is ATP testing in surfaces with biofilms? Is it possible to get a false PASS result for such an insanitary surface?
Lyne : any updates on sound?
Paula : RECONNECT "button" is three dots at the top of the screen
Anita : Hey everyone reconnect on the top of the screen
Eric : Kimberly- Texas?
Thomas Gilley : i GIVE UP
Jessica Cherf : Do we get a copy of the Slides?
Austin Goulet : FLash: Video File NOT Found.......
Steve  : Thanks Ryan!
Michael Perz : Chemicals can interfere with ATP tests.  The easiest way to determine if this occurs is to do a verification study on ATP pre and post sanitizer.  Same numbers = no problem
Frank : it worked after reconnect
Laurie : If you have no sound try clicking reconnect on top of screen this worked for us.
Evelynn : @Frank, we swab after sanitizing.
Benhanifia mokhtar : hi everyone
Ana Maria Guzman : You should Swab pre=op to assure a validate a good cleaning and sanitation procedure
Paula : we clean, inspect, swab and then sanitize (some of the sanitizer will interfere with the ATP swabs)
Thomas Gilley : i AM STEPPING OFF.
Kenly Edwards : post op swab can be used to validate that the sanitation was effective
Sarah : Should you swab before or after sanitization?
tina : Hey Frank   Pasco
Sarah : My current company only uses protein swabs for all sanitation verification. Should we move to ATP & Protein (for allergens), or just ATP? Can yous peak to the differences?
Sabir : What actions do you recommend when results are marginal. Seems like good for trending but not for reporting results (causes confusion in some cases)
Nicole Haddad : Can effective cleaning with no sanitation result in negative ATP?
Garrett : Sarah  it really depends on your type of sanitizer, But hafter is best
Kimberly : Yes - I'm in Texas Eric
Elizabeth : no sound
Dominic : I use ATP testing in saltwater wet opeartions harvesting shellfish.  Is this type of test appropriate for non-rte live in-shell clams and oysters?
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : i want to conduct swab testing for Metal crown corks used for Soft drinks?
Lillian Li : when we conduct ATP validation studies, should we correlate ATP readings to plate counts
jeanette : should we be wet sanitation of a dry mill grinder of flaxseed, no kill step?
Neal : should refrigerated swabs allow to com to room temp before using
Aliyu : Will improper rinsing  of detergent and sanitizer affect the ATP results
Terina : when using ATP swabs it has always been a good thing to find the high numbers so you can be preventive not reactive is this the appropriate approach in your opinion to get the company buy in?
Nicole : if the download didn't work for us, then is it possible you can send or post a new link
Joel : jeanette I would if there is no kill step.
Eric : Kimberly- sorry, mistaken identity... have a good friend in central TX, but spells as "Kimberley"...
Kenly Edwards : we use the Neogen swabs - ecoli, Total Count and Total Coliform - How effective are these test  to validate an EMP
Kimberly : Oh - okay, LOL - to Eric
Eric : :)
Terina : when using ATP swabs it has always been a good thing to find the high numbers so you can be preventive not reactive is this the appropriate approach in your opinion to get the company buy in
Hui : When we determinate baseline, if the majority of values are higher than you idicated, let's say around 200, can we say that my baseline is 200?
Judy Akey : We are going to start using ATP testing for allergens.  Will ATP be able to measure the presence of any/all allergens?
Garrett : Neal our swabs require to bring to room temp
Amit : I understand it may be like comparing apples to oranges, but curious to know, is there any accurate ATP testing to replace micro testing for at least indicator organisms?
Ivan : We have used ATP for hands but are been unable to reach acceptable levels even after several hand wash and disinfection process.
Chris : jeanette, i belive there are dry sanitizers that can be used for your process. the introduction of moisture may be detrimental to your process or equipment. some dry environments in production require that they REMAIN dry.
Saritha Gourishetti : Can we use ATP swabbing to validate allergen cleaniing?
Joel : Ivan your hands are lighting up the test themselves!
Stephanie : What about getting 0 RLU but microbial swabs of the same location indicate microbial growth on plates?
Nicole Haddad : can the ATP test be affected by the body temperature of hands resulting in false results?
Muzaffar : No sound, and slides not moving.
NEDA : can we use ATP swab to validate live cells?
Venky N : HOw does Neogen Compare with ATP units such as Hygiena?
Neal : Thank you Garrett
Frank Aguirre : Allergen swabs are allergen specific.  You can purchase dairy allergen swab versus a treenut swab.
Saritha Gourishetti : Can we dip ATP swab in CIP final rinse water for testing?
Ivan : We have used ATP for hands and never reach an acceptable level even after several hand wash and disinfection. What are we doing wrong?
Sabir : What does a marginal result entail. Should we lean towards cleaning or releasing. Or is it just good for detecting patterns and trends?
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : sound problem
Denis : How soaked should the swab get? Especially that we are advised to avoid standing water
Juan R : reconnect is working
Sarah : what about just using protein swabs for all sanitation verification (including verification)?
Dominic : Because of how much biology is in one drop of seawater and most of our equipment is on the water, we had to raise our fail rate to 1000 rlu. is 1000 rlu a concern?
Antonio : Are ATP and Protein tests the same thing?
Juan R : try please
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : if u have given the answer, i have missed it due to sound problem
Antonio : Are ATP and Protein systems the same thing?
Garrett : Antonio the short answer is no
Marcel : ATP does not reflect presence  of proteins or microbes. But if your ATP value is 0, may i expect absence of microbes and proteins?
Evelynn : I appreciate you not making this a commercial. Fantastic. Thank you!
sarah : are you guys gonna record this webinar? the internet connx is so down!
Muzaffar : Yes reconnecting works.
Vasambal  : thank you
Juan R : the material of the equipment could affect the validation?
Kacy : I'd like to ask the same question as Sarah, what about just using ATP swabs for all sanitation verification and validation?
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : facing too much problem
Ana : Good question Ivan
Nicole Haddad : can the ATP test be affected by the body temperature of hands (of person testing) resulting in false results?
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : hope anyone record it @sarah
Frank Aguirre : Is there a point of diminishing returns when it comes to composite sampling?
Daisy : How  ATP results will vary for different type of surfaces like wood, steel atlhough if the same cleaning and sanitization procedures are followed?
Alireza Farah : After doing a ATP swab on a food contact surface, should the swab spot be cleaned or not?
Argeniz Diaz : Does ATP swabbing differ based on type of areas swabbed? Stainless steel, plastic, Etc?
Liz : Great Webinar!  really information and will show to sanitation
Juan R : New products and new RM in the process require revalidate the ATP protocol?
Antonio : protein swabs results can be correlated to allergens presence/ausence?
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : How its effect the swab testing for metal crown corks used  to cap soft drinks?
Venky N : Sometimes we find ATP testing and APC counts pass but have in some instances of mold/yeast counts (< 100 cfu/swab).  Any insights ?
Ivan : I lost sound and streming - just pressed "reconnect" on top and everything was fine again.
Houman : Normally, how accurate is a ATP machine, how much error-/+?
Susy : Hi ho do you validate your allergen program if not with a protein swab?
Antonio : We know a lot of allergens are proteins, then can protein swabs results can be correlated to allergens presence/ausence?
Garrett : Alireza no you do not
Aliyu : If ATP testing is not good for hands hygiene, what method will you suggest?
Saritha Gourishetti : for how long can we keep an ATP swab which is swabbed but not read on the meter?
Alireza Farah : After doing an ATP swab on a food contact surface, should the swab spot be cleaned or not?
Phil : We have been using ATP for a few years now in our re-packing of fresh produce. This system has been very effective in validating our cleaning processes.
Shareef Ahmad : What is sensitivity of Neogen Test ? in terms of Femtomoles ...
Antonio : Susy I can use a specific test to crustaceans or a generic protein test?
Garrett : Saritha I try to run them within 30 min or less
Tom : Excellent webinar. Very good material. Thanks
Susan : We do testing after sanitation. We use the standard 0-30 scale works fine for us.
Nicole : still unable to download the document
Nathalie Khodr : yes very good webinar, thank you!
Joel : This has been a great webinar!
Nicole : great webinar
Sue : Thank you
Andreas : Very informative presentation :)
Nicole : validation is the key to FSMA's verification programs validitity
Phil : Test AFTER cleaning and BEFORE sanitation or you will not get results on your cleaning processes.
Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif : interesting webinar. had a great understanding for the protocols.
Syed Haider Abbas Kazmi : @nicole please share ur email id
Neal : for outdoor equipment, how quickly should we swab and what is recommended limit
Seda : thank you
Nathalie Khodr : Since ATP and microbial testing are different testing approaches, do you have any recommendation for microbial testing frequency and locations? or a good reference article/book I can refer to? thank you.
Saritha Gourishetti : I think doing a plate culture technique is good for hands
Mitzi L. Fidler : Glo Grem
Terina : Glow germ:)
Steve : When handling RTE foods with your hands, waer gloves.
Blessie : it is called Glo Germ
Mitzi L. Fidler : Glo Germ
Nicole : nberzins@mycotechcorp.com
Nicole : glogerm is great
marcia : what is the difference with Neogen Revealvs ATP testing?
Blessie : does ATP apply to a non food environment? we do plastic bags for food industry
Nathalie Khodr : Since ATP and microbial testing are different testing approaches, do you have any recommendation for microbial testing frequency and locations? or a good reference article/book I can refer to? thank you.
Sarah : thank you, this was excellent!
Amit : Great, very informative!
Kimberly : Fantastic webinar!
Hui : Thank you!
Michael : Thank you, great webinar
Dia' Oddin : No sound and slides doesn't move, the webinar was excellent for the first 27 minutes and then I couldn't to follow.
Peter : So to validate, it is acceptable to use only 3 data points for confirmation?
Lauri : How do we access the Powerpoint presentation?
Neal : thank you for the great talk
Jacinthe Lefebvre : Very good webinar! Thanks!
Nicole : Thank you everyone... Happy Friday!
