Job Description

Buchi Kombucha, a craft kombucha brewery 25 minutes outside of Asheville, NC, is looking for a full-time SQF Practitioner. This is a permanent, full-time position. The primary role of this position is in developing and maintaining Buchi’s food safety and quality systems, but may include other tasks in the brewery as well.

 

This candidate will drive all aspects of Buchi’s food safety and quality systems (FSQA), including SQF certification, all relevant legal requirements, and internal continuous improvement programs. This position is responsible for implementation of said FSQA system through the management of regulatory, company, and customer policies and work instructions. This will require working closely with other departments on production issues, product disposition, and investigations into root causes for deficiencies.

 

Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, and strong communication skills are essential to success within this role. The ability to remain flexible and willingness to perform at high levels to meet peak demands during periods of high volume and activity is essential. This position will report directly to Brewery Manager and Leadership Team and will include training and managing FSQA staff, assessing their performance, and making improvements to the FSQA system.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Maintain, develop, and ensure compliance to SQF, FDA, and code for governing bodies (city/state/health departments), as well as internal company codes relating to food safety and quality
  • Manage internal audits for SQF, legal, and internal FSQA codes, including overseeing corrective actions
  • Manage and maintain all documentation related to FSQA systems, including policies, records, SOPs, and organization of all FSQA related material
  • Lead team meetings, internal and external communications, and corrective actions relating to the FSQA system
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain existing and new testing equipment in in-house lab
  • Lead raw ingredient and product testing, including documentation and reports
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly inspections; ensuring that corrective actions are implemented, communicated and documented
  • Preform regular facility pre-operation inspections and facility inspections
  • Review and approve daily FSQA records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to specifications
  • Identify areas for FSQA system improvement and lead team to desired targets
  • Train and schedule employees involved in the FSQA system and maintain a prospective talent pool
  • Implement and work with department managers on continuous improvement programs
  • Other duties as assigned to support departmental and company initiatives
Qualifications and Skills
  • At least 2 years managing a food safety & quality system
  • International HACCP certification
  • SQF Practitioner certification
  • Experience in:
  • Managing and working with cross functional teams
  • Preparing and leading teams through third party audits
  • Directing and motivating subordinates
  • Conducting performance reviews
  • Using statistical process control methods
  • Using and teaching others on standard office and statistical processing software such as MS Office, Mini Tab, QI Macros, and Tableau
  • Balancing priorities and manage multiple projects on an ongoing basis
  • Effective oral and written communication skills across all organizational levels
  • The ability to maximize teamwork philosophies and achievements
