HI Everyone

I am looking for any advice as to how we may manage Raw Material traceability requirements in ISO22000, in relation to the following scenario.

We are a Paper Mill in the UK manufacturing direct food contact packaging, and currently working towards ISO22000 accreditation, the main raw material used within the process is the wood Pulp which is supplied by a number of different suppliers, with a delivery format typically as follows

  • Full 40Tonne Trailer supplied with a single grade.
  • Typically 110 bales per delivery.
  • Often containing a mix of different batch Numbers – but same supplier.
  • Protected by an outer paper wrapper with the batch details, grade printed directly etc
  • Typically we receive 10 deliveries a day.
  • Single Bales handled within the process.

The challenge we have is that we currently purchase approx. 12 different grades, each grade is identified with different forms of “Trace” data, some have barcodes, some multi digit Numbers, some both, some date of manufacture etc etc , some will have a unique id per bale others per bundle of 8 bales, depending upon the supplier.

We considered generating our own barcode labels which would tie in to the delivery Note or similar, or locating each individual delivery in a specific warehouse location, however due to the significant volume delivered in a day, adding our own trace ID is considered impractical, and is also complicated by the fact that a delivery, quite often will contain multiple batch ID’s which are not then referenced on the delivery notes or similar to allow us to trace up stream.

I wondered whether anyone else had experience of a similar scenario and how they approached it

What would the expected minimum requirements be, is traceable back to a delivery acceptable, even though its highly unlikely the supplier or ourselves would be able to pin point to a specific supplied batch?

Many Thanks in advance for your comments on this.

David
