Lessons from the pandemic on food safety and certification

Took Place:
Friday, March 19, 2021

Presenter:
Angela O’Donovan, BRCGS Head of Standards, BRCGS

Webinar Overview:
Food Safety is a priority for the food industry and challenges such as a pandemic cannot distract our attention from our priorities. Instead, we must adapt and change our approach. At times we need to be more flexible and interestingly this has led us to ways of operating that previously were not considered.

The pandemic has reinforced the importance of working together as an industry to find solutions to maintain food safety and to continue to reassure our customers via certification, that food safety is still our number one priority. Today we will share our learnings on how the industry has adapted to provide audits solutions, the role of ICT, employee training opportunities, feedback from Certification Bodies and pest management.

Nadir Ahmed : Hi everyone 👋
F.M. Aminuzzaman : Hello from SAU, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Gianna Panagpoulou PANAGOPOULOU : Hi everyone..Great topic.
Carol Dyck : Is there a plan in place to have remote audits GFSI approved?
Justice Bhekizulu Sifelani : Is it possible to have unannounced remote audits?
John Figgins : The GFSI benchmark allows blended audits - remote auditing of documentation, with an onsite adit for production and storage facilities. GFSI recently conducted a consultation on remote audit practices, and therefore continue to review best practice
Mastaneh Dalili : Hello, Toronto, CA
John Figgins : Currently, BRCGS does not offer an unannounced remote audit. It would be very difficult for a site, if the auditor suddenly rang the site and stated your audit is starting now. BRCGS are reviewing an unannounced blended audit
Fotini Gkika : Do you believe that the remote audit will not provide full control to the operator to maintain the quality of food and its safety? Thank you very much.
Rachel Rachel : hi
Gloria Rodriguez : Hello, Gloria from Venezuela
Albert Espinoza : Interested in our Presenter's thoughts on the amount of cerfification asessments due, once the pandemic restrictions decrease to safe levels? CB resources for assessments and preparations for the number of on site assessments that are due?
Aria Kusuma : Impossible to implement virtual audit at remote area and poor internet or wifi. How about manual audit but the auditor team follow the COVID-19 health protocols?
Fotini Gkika : DO you believe that pandemic has affected the quality of food?
Thabiso Mdletshe : Great insight 🙌
John Figgins : Where an onsite audit is permitted, for example, due to travel restrictions, then an onsite audit remains an important audit choice that the site can make, and it remains available for all sites, especially those where wfi or other restrictions prevent blended or remote auditing.
John Figgins : CBs continue to monitor their auditor availability and feedback to BRCGS any concerns. Any shortfall in auditor availability is likely to be dependent on the specific country, as different countries are likely to change the restrictions at different times.
Isabelle Netto : Question for ONSITE audits: how do we deal with auditors who refuse to follow COVID protocols? we had one last year who refused to wear a mask inside the office, would only wear PPE inside production.
kathy balcom Balcom : excellent presentation
Zein El Abdine Hijazi : Do remote audit be taken by GFSI as acceptably for GFSI  Schemes
Irina cascaval : thank you
Elizabeth Hilerio : Thank you very much. It is an excellent information
Luke Tetteh : Does remote audit show the actual situation?
Isabelle Netto : Question for ONSITE audits: how do we deal with auditors who refuse to follow COVID protocols? we had one last year who refused to wear a mask inside the office, would only wear PPE inside production
Joe Roberts : great info thanks
Rachel Rachel : auditors are required to follow our building rules , if they refuse can we refuse to let them into the building
