Hi All, 

 

Just preparing food quality objectives and the standard says that the senior management must set objectives concerning 

 

- FOOD SAFETY 

- AUTHENTICITY

- LEGALITY 

- QUALITY 

 

As long as I am ok with food safety and quality, I am not sure what kind of objectives based on SMART I can put for Legality, do we need to cover all four?

I would consider including audit results and product released but these would be pretty much 0 or 100% so no audit non-compliances regarding product legality and 100% of product released meeting legal criteria. You could also include local authority approval inspections.

 

BRCGS suggest keeping up-to-date with legislation and ensuring it is communicated effectively. From BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 9 Clause 1.1.3 Guidance:

A similar situation exists for objectives associated with legality, as these will also need to be formed differently from those commonly used for product safety. For example, where there is proposed legislation in the region where the company operates, then possible targets may relate to ensuring that relevant staff are trained in a timely manner.

Relevant details are likely related to what kind of business you do ?

I have a long library list of all relevant legislation I'm aware of and I also have a list of specific things my product need to comply with.

Since my company is selling nuts, aflatoxins from EC 1881/2006 are an important check for legal compliance.

 

What your legality would cover depends on your location and the products you have on site (both raw materials and final products).

I'm thinking that an easy way to cover the legality objective would be to first define the current frequency of review of legislation for changes and additions and then as your improvement you pledge to increase the frequency by some measurable amount.

 

"Legislative review periods are currently undefined. Review periods to be established, as well as a recording system for reviews with reports to senior management by December 15, 2023."

 

Then in December you establish that you review them annually. Then in December 2024 you can increase the frequency gradually as an improvement, or broaden the legislative scope outside of your province/ state. -- Plenty of ways to slow-walk it.
