How do we keep track of raw materials if they do not have lot codes or any batch numbers? Are lot numbers important for recall and traceability? Is it necessary to have lot number/batch numbers recorded for SQF audit? Can anyone suggest any other way if the raw materials do not have lot codes?

Hi PPPP,

 

Do they have Use By/Best Before Dates? If so I would trace them by that and the date of receipt.

If they don’t I would take it up with your supplier but as a last resort track by date of receipt as per the SQF Code.

2.6.2.1 The responsibility and methods used to trace product shall be documented and implemented to ensure:

ii. The receipt dates of raw materials, ingredients, food contact packaging and materials, and other inputs are recorded (refer to 2.8.1.8 for traceback of allergen containing food products.);

Lot no. or Batch No. is a must. Date of mfg. or use by date can be used if the supplier manufacture one batch per day.

You can issue lot numbers when product is received

 

It could be simply receipt date and BB date

 

DE1823JA1724   or something similar

 

But YOU MUST have a away of tracing all your inputs

We use our PO number if no lot number is available.

Why would raw materials you use NOT have lot numbers or something similar?

If the manufacturer of those materials can't identify their materials for traceability, I'd suggest finding new suppliers.

 

As said above though, if there is no lot number, you can certainly create an internal lot number and track usage that way.
