Sorry Setanta, must have missed that one.
You are on my side, so it certainly wasn't deliberate.

Coming from a chemistry background I have an aluminum (or is it aluminium) foil phobia, at least when it comes to contact with acidic food (like tomato sauce).
6H3O+ + 2Al --> 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2 (if I recall correctly).
There's some scientists who are researching the possibility of Al being a contributer to the possibility of Alzheimer's disease. I've lost enough brain cells and don't wish to accelerate that process!

You bloody Wuss!
Dear Lord (other gods are available), I must admit I do despair!

Dear Caz,
I think this forum is created for all of us who are interested in food safety and quality. Dissenting opinions are welcome but scientific arguments would be highly appreciated
Have a nice weekend

Ok, well with my food safety head on, first question I would be asking is regarding the suitability of the teacher in:
a) not letting the food cool before wrapping in foil
b) picking potentially "high Risk" ingredients such as chicken ( I will assume that it was cooked chicken)
c) not giving instructions to the children on how to store once they got it home
d) not giving instructions on how to reheat.
From Ian's perspective:
a) removing the pizza from the foil to allow to cool
b) storing in the refrigerator once cooled
c) ensuring that the food was going to be nuked before consuming
Hope this satisfies you Avila in that (sometimes) I can be serious about Food Safety, but that this forum isn't just restricted to seriousness, but we can also laugh at ourselves (and at the expenses of others!)
I still think Ian is a Wuss; to be honest, he's probably eaten a lot worse!

You probably would need to do an Acrylamide risk assessment too!

Simon
With my Food Safety head still (firmly) on, and my Joie de Vivre bound & chained in its box, I have to report that today I had an email from the FSA regarding a survey they are conducting in 5 parts regarding Food Safety.
Parts 3-5 are still to be conducted, however Parts 1& 2 have been published
http://www.foodbase....Main_Report.pdf
Makes interesting reading for the unsure such as yourself

I think the related question were all missing is
Is it okay to eat dumpster pizza
If you call just before closing and order like 10 and then don't pick them up adn they give away 3 and they throw the other 7 out
When I lived at rockethaus, we were dumpster diving for food and it was surprisingly clean. Dunkin donuts and Trader Joes were great places to dive. On Tuesdays, Traders Joes would throw out their expired roses, and we would haul them home and I'd have a bath in rose petals with a 40 even though we couldn't afford food. I contend that stale donuts are fine food safety wise if all they've been doing is sitting in a trash bag with other stale donuts.

In our drive to safety......its easy to forget some of the crazy stuff we have all done, were perfectly fine and most likely stronger because of it. Most likely Simon and his kids would have been fine, but Simon we care for you sooooo much we would rather err on the side of safety. Besides there is nothing worse than hugging the toilet, so we didn't want you or kids risking it.
What a great idea with the roses.....I may have to start trolling the local Trader Joes.

Simon, I´m glad you did the right thing and sent it away.
In our daily work, we see food safety like preventive or corrective action? If is preventive why should Simon take the risk?
Cross contamination/refrigeration, is the main issue in this case. Well done Simon.
Rgds.

Idk about chicken I guess.. but the peperoni has never killed me.
Microwaves kill germs anyhow right?
They may kill germs, but they may not destroy heat-stable toxins such as Staph aureus...........so you did the right thing, Simon!

Update: US News & World Report says you can't eat that pizza.

Meh. I've eaten cubic tons of pizza that sat around on my counter or sitting in the stove (cold) waiting for me to eat it again later. It hasn't done any damage that can be verified...
I'd eat it anyhow.

I suppose it also depends on factors like how clean your counter/floor are and what the environment is like e.g. pests.

Well and then there again is the subject of the chicken... I, typically, only get peperoni on my pizza... not sure if that changes too much.

And does stale alcohol ridden breath act as some sort of sanitizer?

Hopefully you've executed a disposition by now! But back in June, I would have eaten it because we don't have disposable income thus can't waste food, I am not immunocompromised, and it's within my personal risk tolerance. But I would not have fed it to my children who are younger than 5, to my wife carrying a baby, nor to anyone else for that matter.

I would have eaten too for most of the same reasons as would my husband. Kids are over 5 but still would not have let them eat it.
