Hello all,

Could anyone recommend a guideline or regulation to reference the need to have locks or seals on incoming food trucks?

Thank you in advance!

is there are argument for not doing it?   if so the exact situation may help.  is there a  food safety standard that you follow?

sqfi

11.6.5.3 Vehicles (e.g., trucks/vans/containers) shall be secured from tampering using seals or other agreed-upon and acceptable devices or systems.

brc version 8

4.16.5

  • requirements for the security of products during transit, particularly when vehicles are parked and unattended

fda

the fda usually does not state you will do "x".  but you need to assess and minimize risk

Hello all,

Could anyone recommend a guideline or regulation to reference the need to have locks or seals on incoming food trucks?

Thank you in advance!

Hi anfrias1,

This was a requirement as per SQF Edition 8.1 Guidance:

Guidance for Developing, Documenting, Implementing, Maintaining and Auditing an SQF System SQF Code, Edition 8.1 – Module 11: Good Manufacturing Practices for Processing of Food Products

11.6.8 Unloading

All incoming shipments/deliveries shall be sealed and ensure that the seal number and trailer numbers are recorded on shipping documents for verification prior to entry to the site. The site shall maintain records of all seal activity.

I'm attaching the relevant page:

Attached File  SQF Edition 8.1 Guidance 11.6.8 Unloading.jpg   212.47KB   0 downloads

4.16.5 covers transport from the site not incoming goods.

BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 9 Clause 4.16 Dispatch and transport:

Procedures shall be in place to ensure that the management of dispatch and of the vehicles and containers used for transporting products from the site do not present a risk to the safety, security or quality of the products.

BRCGS Standard does cover this area in 4.2 Food defence

Clause 4.2.3:

Where raw materials or products are identified as being at particular risk, the food defence plan shall include controls to mitigate these risks. Where prevention is not sufficient or possible, systems shall be in place to identify any tampering.

These controls shall be monitored, the results documented, and the controls reviewed at least annually.

I’m not sure that seals on incoming (goods in) vehicles is ubiquitous. It may be that a delivery vehicle is doing multiple drops, the incoming goods are tamper evident and the vehicle is attended at all times during transportation. Even so, I would prefer to see at least a lock on the vehicle. It may be something that you need to agree with your suppliers.

Kind regards,

Tony
